Mr Mervin Hastings
Mervin Hastings is the Deputy Director at the Conservation and Fisheries Department under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour. He has over 20 years’ experience in Environmental Management. Currently he manages the Environmental Education Division and the Coastal Zone Management Division, which includes the Lifeguard Progamme, Beach Wardens and monitoring of Beaches, Coral Reefs, Mangroves, Sea Grasses, Marine Mammals, Sea Turtles and Coastal Developments. Mr. Hastings has been working for the Conservation and Fisheries Department for the past 26 years.
Mr. Hastings holds an Undergraduate degree in Marine Biology from the University of the Virgin Islands and a Masters of Science Degree from the University of British Columbia with a dissertation in marine turtles titled “The Effects of Growth and Temperature on the Ontogeny of Leatherback Turtles.” Mr Hastings and his dissertation colleague hold the distinction of being the only scientists to successfully raise leatherback turtles in captivity in the past 25 years. His research was featured on National Geographic Canada, The National News (Canada) and several other recognized literature publications.
